Once a town on its own, Forest Lawn is now a community in the SE quadrant of Calgary. It was established in 1910 and was a town along with parts of Forest Heights, Southview, Albert Park/Radisson Heights and Penbrooke Meadows. The town was then incorporated into the City of Calgary in 1961.
Forest Lawn is located on the eastern side of the Bow River. It is bordered by 36 Street SE, 26 Avenue SE, 52 Street SE and 8 Avenue SE. Bisecting the community is 17 Avenue SE. The road, which is also called International Avenue, is lined with an eclectic mixture of shops, restaurants and services. From big grocery stores to family-run restaurants, 17 Avenue SE has everything.
Forest Lawn is home to a variety of schools such as Forest Lawn High School, Jack James High School and Ernest Morrow School. Within the community is also an outdoor pool that is open in the summer and an indoor arena that is open year-round.
Many Calgary Transit bus routes run along 17 Avenue SE and throughout the community. Buses travel to and beyond downtown, in addition to connecting to a variety of LRT stations along the Blue Line. Driving to and from Forest Lawn is also convenient, particularly via Memorial Drive, 17 Avenue SE and Deerfoot Trail.
