Officially called Hounsfield Heights-Briar Hill is a popular inner-city community. It is built on an escarpment that rises up from the Bow River that offers many homes outstanding views. Briar Hill mainly offers a mix of older homes from the 1950s and newly built homes in the higher price ranges. Additionally, century homes can be found in Briar Hill. Apartments and townhouses are available, but fewer. The Renaissance is one high rise, located next to North Hill Mall.
Location of Briar Hill
Briar Hill is located just south of 16th Avenue, which leads quickly to main roads such as Crowhild Trail and Deerfoot Trail, as well as downtown. It is north of the popular communities West Hillhurst and Hillhurst. Kensington is a popular fun area with many local shops, restaurants and coffee shops, officially located in West Hillhurst. On the east side, Briar Hill is bordered by 14 Street West, on the west by Crowchild Trail.

The C-Train station, Lions Park station, is located in Briar Hill. North Hill Shopping Centre is the mall right along 16th Avenue. Briar Hill is home to an elementary school, Briar Hill School. Additionally, SAIT and ACAD are located just across 14th Street. Hounsfield Heights Park and Grasshopper Hill provide small park-like settings in the community. Furthermore, the Jubilee Auditorium is right across 14th Street as well. The Foothills Medical Centre and Alberta Children’s Hospital are both located near Briar Hill, and within the community is a nursing home called Bethany Like many communities in Calgary, also Briar Hill has an active community association.
History of Briar Hill
In the late 1880s, the family of Thomas Riley-Hounsfield settled in the area. Hounsfield Lodge was situated on the present site of the Bethany Care Society. In 1906, the area was annexed by Calgary, and Briar Hill officially became a neighborhood in 1953. While most people refer to this community simply as Briar Hill, the official real estate name is Hounsfield Heights-Briar Hill.
