Although a small community, Shaganappi offers grand sights of downtown. Shaganappi is located south of the Bow Trail and north of 17 Avenue S. The Bow River pathway is just down the hill, connecting to downtown Calgary, Edworthy Park and far beyond.
The name, “Shaganappi,” is a Cree word and has been used since 1870. The neighbourhood was established in SW Calgary in 1949. Now Shaganappi is a mixture of bungalows and new infills.
With its close proximity to the Shaganappi Point LRT station, getting to downtown is a breeze. With one connection, trains connect down south, to the northeast, and up the northwest to SAIT and the University of Calgary. One stop to the west is the Westbrook Mall, which has major retailers, restaurants and a public library. In the community is the Shaganappi Community Association.
While the expansive network of paths and parks along the Bow River are minutes away, community members don’t need to go far for nature. Shaganappi Park is on the south side of Bow Trail and features an off-leash area. Shaganappi Point public golf course has breathtaking views of the city. And for indoor recreation, the Killarney Aquatic and Recreation Centre is just across 17 Avenue.
You don’t need to travel downtown for specialty restaurants. All along 17 Avenue are some of Calgary’s top foodie destinations, including Spiros and the Himalayan.
