Bowness is nestled in the curves of the Bow River, upstream and to the northwest of downtown. It used to be its own town until it joined Calgary in 1964.
It is located south of the river and north of 16 Avenue North. It is accessed via 85 Street West from the north, Sarcee Trail from the south or Bowness Road from the east. Calgary Transit also serves the community with a few bus routes, includes the 1 bus route.
Communities nearby Bowness are Greenwood/Greenbriar (to the west and accessed only via Sarcee Trail), Montgomery (across the river to the east) and to the north across the Bow River are Scenic Acres, Silver Springs and Varsity.
Due to its old age, Bowness real estate greatly varies. There are many old and new detached homes, townhomes and condo buildings. Some properties are nearby the Bow River and have unique views of Calgary’s largest river.
The main shops and restaurants in Bowness are located along Bowness Road. With angled parking along the road, it feels like the main street through a small town. There are unique boutiques, renowned restaurants and all the important services. In addition, there is a public library on Bowness Road. Bowness has a few public schools, ranging from elementary to high school and a Catholic school.
Many beautiful parks are nearby the community. Bowness Park is a popular destination year-round. There are trails, picnic spots, skating, swimming, shelters, parks and a spray park. Bowmont Natural Park is just across the Bow River.
Bowness has a community association that hosts a few annual events, including a Stampede parade and a harvest fair in the fall.
