The SW Calgary community of Shawnessy is a neighbourhood with everything – shops, schools, parks and convenient transit access. Shawnessy was established in 1981. Its location offers easy access into the community, as well as towards downtown and out of the city via Highway 22X. Shawnessy is bounded by Macleod Trail, Shawnessy Boulevard, James Mckevitt Road and 162 Avenue South. Communities nearby Shawnessy are Millrise, Evergreen, Bridlewood and Somerset. All of these communities (except for Somerset) were established in the 1980s.
In the centre of this large community is a park and greenspace. A variety of crescents, cul-de-sacs and roads encircle the park. Shawnessy real estate is most detached single-family homes, in addition to a few townhome complexes.
In 2004, the Calgary Transit LRT was extended from Fish Creek/Lacombe station through Shawnessy to Somerset/Bridlewood. The Shawnessy LRT station was constructed on the eastern side of the community and is a short walk for all community residents. Trains travel to downtown and up to the northwest, directly connecting to SAIT and the University of Calgary.
There is a large shopping centre in the southeastern corner of Shawnessy, which has major retailers, restaurants and a large movie theatre. A few schools serve the community, including Father Doucet Elementary School and Janet Johnstone School. There is a vibrant community association in Shawnessy that has a unique community centre (an old barn on a 17-acre greenspace) available to rent.
