- Set up and arrange for utilities, internet etc. Here are some helpful websites to start.
Utilities
Calgary offers a choice when it comes to your electricity and gas provider. The Utilities Consumer Advocate helps to make sense out of all providers available. If you use their comparison tool and enter Calgary, you will see a list of all the providers.
To compare various energy providers, you can use Energy Rates to find the best rates for electricity and gas.
Internet and phone
While most Calgarians will refer you to Shaw or Telus, Calgary has plenty of other options for the internet. Here is a website that may help you choose from alternatives and often at a lower price. Find internet providers for Calgary
Also, the CRTC gives an overview of phone options, either landline or mobile phones, internet options and TV packages. You can select Calgary to view options.
Garbage collection
Recycling and compost, the black, blue and green bins are collected by the city of Calgary on a weekly or bi-weekly schedule. The City of Calgary has an excellent website to learn more about garbage collection in your area. Enter your address and find out the exact schedule. The schedule changes sometimes due to season or holidays, so to make it easier for you, the City can send you notifications via text message, phone, or email for pick up. You will receive the message a day before pick up. Easy peasy!
Property Taxes TIPP
Calgary property taxes can be paid yearly or monthly. Tipp stands for Tax Instalment Payment Plan and gives the option to pay monthly and automatically via your chequing account. The due date for yearly payments is the end of June.
Canada Post Mail forwarding
Canada Post offers the service to forward your mail to your new address. The website actually mentions that parcels are not being forwarded, so be aware of that! Some Calgary communities have community mailboxes where mail is delivered. Most sellers leave the keys to the mailbox behind on the kitchen counter for the new owners. If that is not the case, contact Canada Post to request a new key.
